Pflueger "Monarch and Neverfail" Minnows

Monarch 2100 Series Minnows - The Pflueger Monarch minnow was the company's top-of-the-line underwater minnow.  The Monarch 2100 series were made in two sizes (3 and 5 hook).  The 3-hook was 2 3/4" long and the 5-hook minnow was 3 5/8" long.  The Monarch minnows were made from c.1909 and were not listed in their 1925 catalogue or any later catalogues.

Both the 3 and 5 hook Monarch minnows appear triangular shaped when viewed from the "Nose".  When viewing the Neverfail minnows from the "Nose" they appear round.  This is a good method to determine a Monarch from a Neverfail minnow.  The Monarch also had a much "Fatter Belly" than Neverfail Minnows when viewed from the side.

Pflueger and Shakespeare "Gem Clip" Hardware -  It is very easy to get confused with early Pflueger and early Shakespeare minnows.  From 1905 thru 1910 both companies used "Gem Clip" See Through Hook Hardware.  Shakespeare had a patent dispute over the Gem Clip hardware against Pflueger and took them to court over this matter.  In 1910 the difference between Shakespeare and Pflueger was easier to see because the Pflueger cup was much smaller in diameter.  The small Pflueger cup was about 1/8" in diameter while Shakespeare still used the larger cup.  In 1910 Shakespeare finally won the lawsuit.  This is when Pflueger switched to Neverfail hook hardware.

Neverfail Hardware

Pflueger "Neverfail" Hardware -  Pflueger switched to the "Neverfail" hardware after Shakespeare won the lawsuit.  In 1910 both Monarch and Neverfail minnows were offered with Gem Clip hardware.  After 1910 Pflueger was only using Neverfail hardware.  The Neverfail patent was granted on October 29, 1911.

Pflueger Propellers Stages

  • (Not illustrated) c.1905 Pflueger first used Bow Tie Floppy propellers on their lures.

  • By 1908 Pflueger prop's were more refined and the blade ends came more to a point.
  • c.1910 - c.1911 This propeller is marked with  the word "PFLUEGER" and they are uncommon and difficult to find.  These props were used on Monarch or Neverfail minnows during the transition from Gem Clip to Neverfail hardware.  This style marked propeller is found on minnows with Gem Clip and Neverfail hardware.
  • c.1910 - 1915 During this time Pflueger was using unmarked plain propellers.
  • c.1916 This is the most common version of their marked propellers.  They were marked with the Pflueger "Bull Dog" Trade Mark.

Neverfail 3100 Series Minnows - The Neverfail Minnow was first introduced in 1909 and was Pflueger's less expensive line of lures.  The Neverfail minnow had all round bodies.  The early round body Neverfails had Gem Clip hardware and large cups.  After Shakespeare won the lawsuit Pflueger no longer used Gem Clip hardware and in 1911 it was replaced with Neverfail hardware.

c.1911 -   The propeller is marked with the word "PFLUEGER".  This is one of the First Neverfail's with Neverfail hardware.  It has a shaped body and is 3 1/2" long.
c.1911-1914 This Neverfail minnow has Neverfail hardware and unmarked plain propellers.  It has five hooks and is 3 5/8" long.
c.1911-1914 This Neverfail minnow has Neverfail hardware and unmarked plain props.  This three hook lure is 3" long.
c.1916 Neverfail minnow is 3" long and has the second version of the marked propellers.  The prop is marked with the Pflueger "Bull Dog" Trade Mark.
