  Experienced lure collectors know the importance of reading and educating themselves on the subject of antique lures.  Usually it is the inexperienced or beginner collector that has not realized the importance of learning what they are purchasing or selling but after a few costly mistakes they will realize this fact.  I have designed page to inform advanced and beginner collectors what books are available on this subject and where they can be purchased.

  ***19th Century Fishing Lures ** Beginning in the mid to late 1800's firms such as JT Buell, WD Chapman, and the Enterprise Mfg. Co. produced lures that rivaled their overseas counterparts both in quantity and quality.  This book provides a written and visual history of many American lure companies.  Collectors will enjoy this history of America's earliest fishing lure manufacturers prior to 1901.  This book is done in color and contains a list of current values.

  Antique & Collectible Fishing Reels by Harold Jellison & Daniel Homel ** This paperback is a 144 page helpful guide to identification, evaluation, and care of old reels.  The new edition of "Antique and Collectible Fishing Reels" clearly communicates the sentiments of nostalgia that are so apparent in the exciting hobby of collecting old fishing tackle. Reel types dating from 1860 to 1970 are covered, including bait casting multipliers, fly reels, ocean trolling reels, spinning, and unusual reels.

  Antique & Collectible Fishing Rods by Daniel Homel ** This 128 page paperback book is a valuable resource for collectors seeking information about old bamboo, wood, steel, and fiberglass rods. The author provides a concise history of rod construction techniques and analysis of classic design patents dating from 1875 - 1950. Detailed illustrations and photographs of distinctive rod components are included.

  Antique Fly Reels by Daniel Homel & Dan Homel ** This 160 page paperback book is a detailed catalogue of antique fly reels. The author has produced great photos making it easy to identify and decipher reels for the enthusiast. A guide to values is accurate for today's market. Easy to read format.

   Capt. John's Fishing Tackle Price Guide by John Kolback & Russell E. Lewis **    This full size price guide has 272 pages that list thousands of values for old lures.  If values are what you need this is an excellent book to have.

  Classic Fishing Lures and Angling Collectibles by D.B. Homel ** This is a 8 1/2 x 11" soft cover book. It has 144 pages all done in black & white. It is more of a comprehensive history book on early wood lures, scarce metal baits and rare bass flies. It also has a section on fishing tackle paraphernalia. It does illustrate some of the common lures, metal baits, bass flies and angling accessories with a value guide.

Lewis **  Covering the collectible lures of the six most popular lure manufacturers in North America-Heddon, South Bend, Paw Paw, Pflueger, Creek Chub and Shakespeare-this is a full-color book.  The book features a history of each manufacturer, with nearly 2,000 listings of the most collectible lures on the market, complete with pricing guide.  Available at 

  *** Classic Fishing Lures and Tackle by Eric Sorenson and Howard Lambert ** This color hard cover book gives an overview of a variety of fishing gear and fishing memorabilia.  There is information on manufactures such as Heddon, Pflueger, Shakespeare, South Bend and Orvis.  Eric Sorenson provides historical background on the origins and evolution of fishing gear, from information on the inventors of particular pieces and backgrounds on companies that produced them.

  *** Collector's Encyclopedia of Creek Chub (Second Edition) by Harold E. Smith M.D. **  This book is a must for Creek Chub collectors and it is even better than the first edition.  It is a hard cover book with 300 pages of full color.  There are over 1,500 pictures with lots of new information.

  Collecting Fishing - Instant Expert by Carl Caiati ** It is a 4 x 8" soft cover book. There are 116 pages in black & white. There are small sections on rods, reels, lures and miscellaneous collectibles. It does have a value guide.

  Collecting Fishing Tackle a Beginners Guide by Tom Quinn ** It is a 5 1/2 x 8 1/2" soft cover book. There are 80 pages in black & white. This is a good book and can be very helpful for the collector that is thinking about or just starting a tackle collection.

  The Collector's Guide To Antique Fishing Tackle by Silvio Calabi ** This book is organized and put together very well. It is a 9 x 12" hard cover 224 page book. This book has 100's of great close up photos in full color. It has a section for Rods, Reels, Lures, Decoys, Art & Accessories and an Collector's Guidelines. There is no value guide.

  *** Fishing Lure Collectibles - Second Edition by Dudley Murphy and Rick Edmisten **This book is just as good or better than the First edition.  This book is a 8 1/2 x 11" 400 page hard cover book.  This book concerns itself primarily with collectible antique lures before 1940.  It illustrates over 1,000 color lure reproductions along with a descriptions and a current collector value.

  *** Fishing Lure Collectibles - Volume Two - The Modern Era by Dudley Murphy and Deanie Murphy  ** This book focuses on lures made since 1940 but on occasion includes pre 1940 lures which were carried over into the 1940's.  This book is a 8 1/2 x 11" 400 + page hard cover book.

  ***The Fishing Lure Collector's Bible by R.L. Streater with Rick Edmistem & Dudley Murphy ** This is one of the most comprehensive antique fishing lure identification & value guide available. This book has just been released in June of 1999. The authors of Fishing Lure Collectibles have teamed up with Streater and completely updated his research for this new book. This soft cover book has 469 pages of great information and over 1,800 lures from many manufacturers.

 *** Heddon Catalogs - Over 50 years of Great Fishing 1902 - 1953 **  This is Mr. Clyde Harbin (The Bassman) last book.  This book contains a sampling of the most significant catalogs produced by Heddon from 1902.1953.  Collectors will enjoy the nostalgia of the times, be able to observe the evolution of Heddon's lures and marketing, and utilize the color chart and lure listings provided to grow and identify their own collections.

  *** The Heddon Legacy by Bill Roberts and Rob Pavey ** This book has 370 color pages, 1,400 photos, five chapters of Heddon family history, details on all Heddon lures made from 1902 to the 1960s and extensive chapters on factory prototype baits, lure boxes, box papers,  flyrod lures, reels and advertising memorabilia.

  *** The History & Collectible Fishing Tackle of Wisconsin by Robert A. Slade ** New for 99. This is a well researched and informative book for Wisconsin tackle manufactured from 1850 through 1975. This book is a must for Wisconsin tackle collectors. It is a hard cover 290 page book and a value guide is available. Their are over 1,000 pictures which 144 pages are in brilliant color and beautifully done. The book is available from the author, Robert A.   Made in Michigan Fishing Lures by George Richey ** This is a 8 x 10" soft cover book. There is 168 pages all done in black & white. The book is divided into 5 sections. Metal Lures, Wood Lures, Plastic Lures, Miscellaneous Lures and Patented Michigan Lures but not found. A separate sheet with values did come along with the book.   *** Modern Fishing Lure Collectibles by Russell E. Lewis **  This book covers lures, reels, rods and decoys that were made from 1940's to the 1980's.  It includes history of all the major company's and many of the smaller company's.  This book is very nicely done and it is done in brilliant color. This is a terrific book for identification and value guide for newer lures.

  South Bend Their Artificial Baits and Reels by Jim Bourdon ** This is a excellent book for the South Bend collector. It is a 8 1/2 x 11" soft cover book. There are 112 pages all in black & white. The book is divided into 5 chapters. South Bend Plugs - South Bend Metal - Dressed Hooks - Flies & Fly Rod Lures - Rubber Lures & Pork Rind - South Bend Reels.   *** Top of the Line Fishing Collectibles by Donna Tonelli ** This is a excellent book for lure collectors. It is 8 1/2 x 11" 160 page hard cover book. This book is in full color and does list values for each lure. It has 7 chapters - Fish Decoys - Ice Sticks and Spears - Lures - American Reels - Creels and Bait Boxes - Fish Models and Plaques & Folk Art. The book is beautifully done and gives a good history on every subject.

  Warman's Fishing Lures Field Guide by Carl F. Luckey & Clyde Harbin Sr. **  This Field Guide is a distillation of information from the Old Fishing Lures & Tackle book first put together by Carl F. Luckey in 1980 and currently in its sixth edition.

 Old Fishing Lures and Tackle by Carl F. Luckey ** 5th Edition This latest edition came out in April 99. Excellent book for any lure collector. It is a 8 1/2 x 11" soft cover book. It has 670 pages with hundreds of new listing, 32 pages in full color and 2,000 photos. It has a section for Fishing Reel, American Fishing Rods, Early Fishing Lures and with the latest value guide.

  Collector's Guide to Creek Chub Lures & Collectibles by Harold E. Smith M.D. ** This is a excellent book for Creek Chub collectors. It is a 8 1/2 x 11" 207 page hard cover book all in color. Prices are also included. It is full of identification information and shows special and rare colors. There is a good section on catalogs, lure boxes and miscellaneous Creek Chub items. At the end of the book there is a section for Shur-Strike lures and their colors.

  Early Fishing Plugs of the U.S.A. by Art and Scott Kimball ** This is a 8 1/2 x 11" soft cover book. There are 231 pages most in black & white. There are about 16 pages in full color that show lure displays by different manufactures and individual lures. The book gives a good history of fishing plugs in the USA.

  Fishing Tackle Antiques and Collectables by Karl White ** Excellent book for lure collectors. It is a 8 1/2 x 11" book. It has 328 pages and all lures are in full color. There have been lures that were difficult to identify and I found them shown in this book. The purpose of this book is to identify and evaluate lures. There is a section for Rods, Reels, Tackle Boxes and Lure Boxes. It also has lure prices.

  Fishing Tackle made in Missouri by Dean A. Murphy ** It is a 8 1/2 x 11" soft cover book. There are 114 pages all in black & white. The purpose of this book is to present a historical record of all fishing tackle made in Missouri pre 1900 through 1989. There are over 50 pages with patents issued to Missourians. There is no value guide in this book.

  Classic and Antique Fly-Fishing Tackle by A. J. Campbell ** This is a 360 page hardcover book.  It has the history of early bamboo fly rod makers and it is informative and interesting.  If you are interested in fly fishing rods and reels, this book is well worth it. This book has lots of information on rods, reels, collecting, tackle manufacturing and tackle value.

  Heddon Historical Footprints by Clyde A. Harbin Sr.  The famous BASSMAN TM has assembled his lifetime of experiences and vast knowledge in this book. Clyde Harbin is the nation's foremost authority on antique fishing lures and has over thirty years of research on the Heddon family and company.

  James Heddon's Sons Catalogs by Clyde A. Harbin Sr. *** Excellent book for advanced Heddon collectors. This book covers over fifty years of lures. It was compiled and published in 1977 by Clyde Harbin Sr. It contains copies of Heddon catalogs dating from 1903 to 1953 complete with lures, rods and reels.
